dont be a hero..

Tried to eat oats with soy sauce and sausages last night. didnt work for me. i nearly puked but theson seemed to love it. I've eaten oats with milk and sugar all my life so now my body seems to reject it if i have it with anything salty.

Theson woke up at 4am today asking to go to school. School has been closed for a week due to HFM so it looks like he misses school. Funny.

Thewife not feeling so good but was still on night shift this week. she had insomnia after the 1st night so she had to come back home 1/2 way thru her 2nd night. cravings are starting.

A pair of swallows have made a home on the piping of the aircon in the 2nd room.

Theson is a chip of the old block.. Like me he can also survive on mash taters and spaghetti..
but he also still needs rice as seen last week when he requested to go to thebabysitters place to eat rice and soup. this after only 2 days of non-rice diet over the weekend. :-)

we are monitoring theson closely for fever and spots on his hands and feet.
i hope it just turns out to be nothing.

new koay kak

found a new koay kak place.
its better than the one at the market near our place. and cheaper too....
thewife commented that its a less stress stall as well.

the one at the market has a husband and wife team with the wife frying and the husband coordinating. they're always bickering and its always very tense when you want to buy from them. the new stall we found has the husband frying and the wife coordinating. no stress at all and it even reminds me of the koay kak that i use to eat during my childhood.

roadtrip

met my sister last weekend for brunch at a 1/2way point town between the island and the capital. she had to travel 250km while we had to go around 130km.

we were up at 530am and left the house at 645am. ETA at 1.5 hours. it was a very pleasant drive all the way and i was going around 110-120km all the way.
very little cars and trucks and the weather was pretty cloudy. very comfy for a long drive on the highway. oh yeah, i missed the exit to where i was supposed to meet them and had to make a u-turn.yaya, human compass...
we arrived at 830am sharp and my sis and her 3 friends only arrived at 900am and so we only reached the dimsum place close to 10am. dim sum was so-so only with very limited variety. the prawn dimsum was quite good though. fresh and very tasty.

met thewife's old colleague and went for a "light breakfast" around 30minutes after the dimsum. we went to an old coffee shop in the center of town.
we were served:-
satay x20-30 sticks (it was an eat what you can concept and we only ate around 15-20 sticks)popiah original x3 (bigger and better than the one on the island but maybe because it had more stuff)
popiah fried x3 (the fried variety, i liked it a lot as well)
creme caramel x4bowls (very surprised they served this. it was quite good but not as good as thewife's. it came served with ice water so you can imagine how sweet it was)
stir fry beansprout x1 huge plate (theson and i practically ate everything)
soup noodles x4bowls (i did not eat this but thewife liked it a lot)
we only managed to finished 3/4 of the food. eventhough there we eight of us all together, or technically nine if you count theson, we were really struggling to finish the all food.

after that we went to buy the local biscuits in town and went window shopping for a hour before we left at around 230pm.the drive home was pretty fast with sporadic rain along the way.i really like driving the chevy on the highway. i can really "put the pedal to the metal" and its much more fuel efficient on long journeys.back at the house at around 400pm.

can you build it?

theson is hooked on Bob the builder and thomas the train.
actually, bob the builder is quite engaging and i'm watching it as well. i know why he likes bob and thomas, its because of the train or tractor, crane and other mechanical equipment. i'm not sure why he likes pingu though.

theson tells us stories abt school, what he ate, who he pushed or who pushed him, who the teacher scolded. Sometimes hes a bit incoherent but hes trying to talk to us which is good.
thewife has trouble understanding him sometimes though when he talks. maybe because he talks with the pacifier in his mouth and he kinda mumbles. and i kinda mumble as well so i definitely understand him :-)

he's getting quite a bit of homework from school as well and we of course have to help him write his alphabets and numbers. his teacher said his hands are a bit weak. i've been teaching him how to hold a pencil and how to draw lines, etc and really, teaching him how to write needs a lot of patience. lots and lots and lots....

i noticed that we buy him a lot of toys and i just realise that could it be because we never had those things at his age.
is that good or bad???

things we did for theson when he was a baby

1. driving around in the car so that theson can drink his milk. he likes the vibrations in the car.
note: most of the time when i was doing all the above, both thewife and me were both very tired and 1/2 asleep. and all 3 of us were cranky. and both of them more crankier than me :-) so u can imagine the chaos that ensues...

2. feeding theson his milk but standing up, if you sit down he will stop drinking. for the life of me, i stilll have not figured this one out..

3. driving around during power failures until the power comes back on.it gets pretty darn hot in the house without the aircon. yes, we are pampered..!!!!

4. driving around in the car so that theson will stop crying. same as no1

5. driving around at 2am in the morning looking for a clinic, when theson could not stop coughing. he was 6mths old at the time and thewife was thousands of miles away in the states for a conference. i was totally absolutely freaked out. he finally settled down and we drove home in the end.

6. changing his poo-filled diaper in the back seat of our car. now this takes skill and we actually perfected it. shopping malls, playground, carparks...you name it, we've tried it...

7. making his milk from the front seat of the car. again, this takes skill as you need to juggle the milk bottle, hot water, warm water and milk powder without messing up the car and still get the correct temp for the milk. too hot or too cold and mr fussypants will not drink his milk.

i hope we will have it easier when no#2 arrives.....

finally....i can eat my pie

thewife finally fulfilled my longtime dream of shepherds pie.(aka poor mans pie, as she told me, from her extensive research.....)
she made it with cauliflowers, brocolli, mushrooms, mix veg, onions and mash potatoes.
for the gravy she used mushroom soup. then everything baked for 15-20mins, overall, it was quite good.
as i told her, i thought the mushroom soup would overpower everything else, but it was actually quite a good combination.
i loved it and theson loved it as well.
it should be able to cover 2-3 of my lunches & dinners.
she said that it was quite easy to make...
so i'll be expecting more pies in the future...

(so far she has made it twice already...yaay...!!!)

its hard

sometimes as a father and husband, i dont fulfill my christian duties.
for this season of lent, i did not go for ash wednesday or stations of the cross or holy week service or even easter mass.
i did not even fast or even at the least, skip meat on fridays.
sigh...
frankly we have not gone to mass for so long that i cant remember when we did go.
i admit, i am lazy and i need to do better. i need to set a better example for theson.
theson even said he wanted to go to church.

so, last sunday we all went to church the 10am mass. it rained pretty heavily during mass.
it felt good to be back in the lord's house again with my wife and my son.
i just need to be more consistent.

thewife went for bible study last friday and she seemed to have a good time. i think she will go again.
we also started saying the rosary since may is the month of the rosary. so far only one decade a day since theson cant really focus.
it brings back memories of saying the rosary in the old wooden house with my family when i was a kid.
my aunt gave theson a rosary, thewife has one from her baptism and i've got my trusty one from 1st holy communion.
thewife is catching up pretty fast on the hail mary's.
