a pinch of regret

Durian season is over and I feel a bit of regret.
Did not eat as much durian as I wanted to.
but, at least I focused on the good stuff.
Only ate the D-24’s and Red prawn variety.
and i definitely ate more than thewife though.

compressed holiday..

Mysis was back last week and it was a real hectic trip for her.... and for me as well.
Was shuttling her from our house to our mums house (~40mins one way) and back, on thusday and Friday and Sunday.. pheeeew….
Couldn’t give her the car as thewife and me working at diff times.
She did manage to bring me 1 dozen donuts from big apple donuts. Very excellent.
She also bought a DIY pink plastic stool from IKEA. (Curse you IKEA for making me work…!!!)
We tried to leave theson with her to babysit on Friday night but he was all against it.

Had a disastrously dinner at Chillis with the family. Had the taco, bbq chicken, chips… bleeh……
Food was so-so, service sucked really, really bad (i waited >10mins and my drink was not refilled and i had to ask to get it topped up,, jeez..)
...and my mum was sick and should have been in bed at home.
At least we went managed to go shopping.

new koay kak

found a new koay kak place.
its better than the one at the market near our place. and cheaper too....
thewife commented that its a less stress stall as well.

the one at the market has a husband and wife team with the wife frying and the husband coordinating. they're always bickering and its always very tense when you want to buy from them. the new stall we found has the husband frying and the wife coordinating. no stress at all and it even reminds me of the koay kak that i use to eat during my childhood.

finally....i can eat my pie

thewife finally fulfilled my longtime dream of shepherds pie.(aka poor mans pie, as she told me, from her extensive research.....)
she made it with cauliflowers, brocolli, mushrooms, mix veg, onions and mash potatoes.
for the gravy she used mushroom soup. then everything baked for 15-20mins, overall, it was quite good.
as i told her, i thought the mushroom soup would overpower everything else, but it was actually quite a good combination.
i loved it and theson loved it as well.
it should be able to cover 2-3 of my lunches & dinners.
she said that it was quite easy to make...
so i'll be expecting more pies in the future...

(so far she has made it twice already...yaay...!!!)

eating again..

where has my diet gone? arent i supposed to be losing weight? :-)
i'm trying, really... only weight 68kg now..

Went out last Friday to B-Bay to buy dinner since thewife was on night shift. I was hoping to buy the belacan rice and tomyam but the tomyam noodles stall was closed so I had to go with Belacan rice and Koaykak instead. The Belacan rice did not disappoint and the koaykak was surprising good. Nearly as good as the one near our market which I normally frequent. theson also enjoyed it and ate nearly ½ of the koaykak. As usual, after I bought everything, it started to rain…. Had to run to the car with theson in one hand and all the food in the other hand.

Had pork ribs at a ribs restaurant at G-Drive over the weekend since I’ve been craving it for months. Was a bit disappointed although it was much better than the other ribs place that I went to with thewife. This place was actually deserted at 630pm and it was just the 3 of us. i have no idea how they survived all these years. thewife was also very amazed.
anyway, I ordered 2 half ribs with 4 ribs each with mash potato, corn, beans and soup for theson. Ribs still taste good but I noticed they were smaller than what I was expecting. Thewife did not like them much so she passed me ¾ of the ribs on her plate which I happily ate.
Theson enjoyed the mash, corn, beans and soup. His belly was pretty full as he had 4pcs of chicken nuggets earlier on as well. Hes really a growing boy as he will eat everything these days.
Overall rating of 3/5.

We also invested in a half boil egg maker. Previously all our attempts at making ½ boiled eggs with just boiling water and a bowl would end up with only less than 60% success. This time around its 100% success everytime.
i'm always amazed at how thewife eats her ½ boiled eggs, which is drinking it directly from a cup or bowl with a tad of soy sauce. me on the other hand cannot have it without dunking it with buttered toast bread. i never drink it, never.. ever... it's just not right :-)
i also prefer Worcestershire sauce rather than soy sauce.
half-boiled egg and roti canai is also very good combination. with eu-char-kueh is even better. but both are super duper oily and very very very unhealthy.

bought a box of Cadbury triple choc ice cream. taste ok only and its another case of buying something that does not looks like what is shown on the picture on the box. it was supposed to be a treat for myself since i got a raise. i shud have gone for baskins or bulla. too bad no ben&jerrys around here.. darn sad.

also bought a jar of sweet hotdog relish. I had some with my sandwich last nite for dinner, with chicken burger, cheese, lettuce and it was pretty darn good. Will be eating the same thing again tonight. yay!

thewife said that i'm becoming like wanglung from the good earth. i think so too. i called her lotus though.
i must strive to be less extravagant on the food items.
well, i'll try.....

very fishy indeed

went for dinner at the man-fish-market at the nearby shopping mall a few days back.
i ate:
-flaming platter for 1, with fish, rice, chips and prawns
i really liked the fish and the rice but the chips and the prawns were a total letdown. the sauce for the prawns killed it for me as i felt it was too sweet and the fries were like they were made yesterday. i've had better fries.
theson ate practically all the rice.

-mussels in garlic butter sauce with bread for dipping
dont think the mussels were fresh and the bread was quite dry. if i could turn back time, i would not have ordered it.

-sweet alabama
it was a chocolate shake type of drink and i really liked it. i like anything chocolate..

-fish and chips kids meal for theson
fish was quite oily and fries were dry but theson seemed to like the fish.

it was a weekday so not many people and no complaints about the service. but for the food, oveerall, i was not impressed. 2/5 rating only.

german feast

Thewife took me to for a Bavarian brunch buffet on yesterday. Dropped theson of at thebabysitters and off we went. we really needed the "alone" time away from it all and i'm glad we did it.

It was actually a surprise lunch for me as she only told me the location at the very last minute. it was in one of the hotels up north so we took a leasirely sunday drive and reached there at around noon. the restaurant as fully booked and our booking was the last one to be confirmed.. lucky us..
the food was excellent and we ate till we close to puking...
well in actual fact we didnt really eat that much.
there was just way too much good food to eat and too little stomach space... what a waste...
there was even a space dedicated just for desserts.
desserts which were to die for.

things i remember eating.. well most of them ...
-german sausage soup, heavy on the lentil
(good, but reminded me a bit of greeen bean soup)

-german sausages and saur kraut, bread dumpling, and other german food as well
(sausages were nice and tender with the right amount of "crunch" from the skin, the saur kraut was allright i guess... ate lamb, fish and beef as well but could remember the names)

-cheeses, breads, salads
(didnt have space to eat these...)

-beef mignon, roast chicken,
(didnt have space to eat these...)

-asian, sushi, naan, noodles, satay
(skipped noodles but ate every thing else, for sushi i didnt go for the salmon but instead opted for the baby octopus.. a bit weird tasting)

-puddings, strudels, sacher, mousse, ice cream, peach crumble, apple tart,
(only managed the choc mousse, slice-o-sacher and a scoop of ice cream shared with thewife. the wife was pracitcally overdosed from sugar as she took some choc pudding and it was sweet as hell)

-chocolate fountain
(dipped a honey dew and a marshmallow... the wife took kiwi and mmallow as well... very nice)

-fruit juice, coffee and beer
(drank the orange juice and later had coffee to kill the sugar high from teh desserts. had to skip the beer or else i would have had to skip dessert or i would have puked from overeating)

the live band was playing german folks song i guess... very heavy on the trumpets.. the music actually helped improve the mood during the brunch.
thewife said that she was reminded of gretchen from malcolm in the middle.

thewife said that i'm biased when it comes to food. why?
because the same food could be a dish from an asian country but i would never eat it.
for instance, the saur kraut taste like some chinese veggie dish but she said i would not even look at it but here i was stuffing my face with saur kraut.
well maybe i am biased.... too baaaad.... :-)

after paying, we walked the beach (with lollypops stuck in our mouth) for another 15min before we drove back home, which was another 45min drive. tired.....

we'll be going back next month i guess.. :-)
